VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES
Patient Care Units
Essential to the healing process is the nursing care provided for
patients during their stay at Palisades Medical Center. The patient
and his physical and psychosocial needs are the focus of all
activities of the nursing team. Members of the team include the
patient and their family, all nursing personnel, and Volunteers. The
Nursing Unit Volunteer assists the nursing staff with a variety of
routine nonprofessional tasks. As a result, the professional staff's
skills can be more efficiently utilized for patient care.
Transporting Patients Volunteers assist with the courteous, safe, and timely movement of
patients within the medical center by wheelchair. Volunteers also
assist the ambulatory patient who is being admitted or discharged.
In addition, this service is responsible for the quick movement of
other information/records from one department to another.
Gift Shop/Gift Cart By staffing Gift Shop, the Gift Shop* Volunteer provides everyday,
seasonal, and holiday merchandise to satisfy the needs of patients,
visitors, and hospital staff. They offer for sale a variety of
items, which are appealing and often essential for the patient's
comfort. The Gift Cart* Volunteer circulates throughout the medical
center bringing Gift Shop items to the patients and visitors. This
is also an opportunity for them to socialize with the patients,
providing a pleasant break for both. Circulate gift shop cart
stocked with gift items, toiletries and candy for patients, visitors
and staff.
Office Work
Many departments throughout the medical center rely on Volunteers to
assist with clerical duties. A Clerical Volunteer may be asked to
file, photocopy, collate minutes and reports, open and sort mail,
answer telephones and make calls to schedule meetings, assist with
mailings, run errands, and many other tasks. A sample of those
departments utilizing clerical Volunteers during 2005 included:
- Finance
- Patient Registration
- Medical Records
- Marketing/Public Relations
- Foundation
- Human Resources
The Information Desk Volunteer provides a communication link for
patients and visitors. Volunteers assigned to the Desk promote a
positive image of the medical center by greeting and assisting all
in a warm and caring manner while projecting PMCs #1 goal of
patient satisfaction. The Mail Room Volunteer assists the Mail Room staff in all aspects
of sorting and delivering mail in an efficient and timely manner for
patients, departments, and affiliates throughout the medical center.
Pharmacy Under the direction of the Director of the Pharmacy or one of the
pharmacists, the Pharmacy Volunteer assists all members of the
Pharmacy department in limited job functions. They are responsible
for providing assistance to the department staff by performing a
variety of procedures necessary for the proper and efficient
operation of the department. Thank you for your inquiry regarding Volunteer Service at Palisades Medical Center.
